NEW DELHI: The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring a multi-country outbreak of hantavirus infections linked to an international cruise ship after several severe cases and deaths were reported across different countries.

According to health authorities, passengers and crew members who travelled on the vessel during recent voyages have tested positive for the virus, prompting an international investigation into the source and spread of the outbreak. Several countries have initiated contact tracing, surveillance, and precautionary health measures to identify potential exposures and prevent further transmission.

WHO stated that while the outbreak has raised concern due to the severity of some reported cases, the overall global public health risk currently remains low. Investigations are underway to determine whether the infections were caused by exposure to contaminated environments, rodents, or onboard facilities associated with the cruise ship.

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious viral disease primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodents, their droppings, urine, or saliva. In severe cases, the infection can lead to respiratory complications and organ failure.

Public health agencies have advised travellers and cruise operators to strengthen sanitation, monitoring, and preventive measures while urging passengers experiencing symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle pain, or breathing difficulties to seek medical attention immediately.

The WHO said it is coordinating with national health authorities, maritime agencies, and disease surveillance networks to monitor developments and assess whether additional international health measures may be required.
