NEW DELHI: Russia has launched its most extensive drone and missile strike on Ukraine since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, over 728 Iranian-made Shahed drones and 13 cruise missiles were launched overnight, targeting key military, energy, and communication infrastructure across multiple regions including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, and Odesa.
Despite Ukraine’s robust air defense systems, the sheer volume of drones led to partial penetrations of urban areas. Local authorities reported temporary power outages, fuel depot fires, and at least 11 civilian injuries in Kyiv alone. Ukrainian officials confirmed that over 600 drones were intercepted, showcasing continued international support in air defense hardware.
This major assault follows closely after U.S. President Donald Trump’s public rebuke of Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of prolonging hostilities for political leverage. Many analysts view the strike as a show of force in response to Western rhetoric and the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome, where global allies are expected to commit billions in aid.
“This isn’t just about military targets. It’s psychological warfare intended to shake morale and global attention,” said Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff to President Zelenskyy.
As drones approached Ukraine’s western frontier, Polish fighter jets were scrambled in precautionary maneuvers. Poland’s Defense Ministry stated it remains on high alert, reinforcing NATO's commitment to defending allied airspace.
Speaking from Rome, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed for urgent assistance. “Russia is testing our limits and the world’s resolve. We need more air defense systems now — not after more cities go dark,” Zelenskyy stated.
The Ukrainian leader reiterated calls for F-16 fighter jets, Patriot systems, and expanded sanctions against Russian drone suppliers.
