NEW DELHI: A United Nations–backed investigation has uncovered severe human rights abuses inside Myanmar’s detention facilities, detailing harrowing accounts of torture, sexual violence, and inhumane treatment of detainees.
The report documents methods including electric shocks, strangulation, gang rapes, and the burning of sexual organs, allegedly carried out by security forces. Investigators say these acts amount to crimes against humanity and reflect a systematic pattern of abuse since the military seized power in 2021.
Victims include political prisoners, activists, and civilians accused of opposing the junta. The findings have sparked renewed international calls for accountability and stronger sanctions against Myanmar’s military leadership.
The Myanmar junta has not responded to the latest allegations, but has previously denied targeting civilians.
