Trump hints at major US–India trade deal during public remarks

NEW DELHI: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that a “very big” trade agreement with India may be on the horizon, reigniting interest in bilateral economic ties between the two countries.

Speaking at a campaign-style event in Michigan on Wednesday, Trump said, “We’re working on a great deal with India — a very big one. It’s coming together beautifully.” Though he did not provide specific details, the comments have triggered speculation about a possible new phase of U.S.–India economic engagement, should Trump return to office.

Trade experts note that Trump’s remarks come amid growing geopolitical alignment between Washington and New Delhi, particularly in areas of defense, technology, and supply chain diversification.

The previous Trump administration had laid the groundwork for a limited trade agreement with India, but negotiations stalled over issues including tariffs, digital trade, and agricultural access.

Analysts say a renewed deal could include provisions on semiconductors, defense manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and market access for U.S. goods.

While the Biden administration has continued to deepen strategic ties with India, a Trump-led White House may push for a more transactional, high-visibility agreement that aligns with his “America First” trade policy.

India has yet to officially respond to the latest comments. However, diplomatic sources indicate that informal discussions between trade representatives from both countries have resumed in recent weeks.

A comprehensive U.S.–India trade agreement could significantly reshape global supply chains and signal stronger economic cooperation between two of the world's largest democracies.
