Russia launches largest air assault on Ukraine, targets Kyiv government building

NEW DELHI: Russia has carried out its most intense aerial bombardment since the start of the war, striking Ukraine’s capital Kyiv with a wave of missiles and drones. Among the targets hit was the Cabinet of Ministers building, which was set ablaze after sustaining direct damage.

According to Ukrainian authorities, at least four people, including an infant, were killed, while dozens were injured in the overnight assault. Explosions reverberated across central Kyiv, shattering windows, damaging infrastructure, and leaving residents scrambling for shelter.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting several incoming projectiles, but the scale of the attack overwhelmed air defenses. Emergency crews worked through the night to extinguish fires and rescue civilians trapped in damaged buildings.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, calling them “an act of terror aimed at breaking the spirit of the Ukrainian people.” He once again urged Western allies to step up military support, particularly advanced air defense systems.

The Kremlin has not officially commented on the strikes, but Russian state media described them as a “strategic response to Kyiv’s continued military operations.”

The escalation comes as international pressure mounts for renewed peace negotiations. Western leaders have denounced the assault, with NATO warning that such large-scale attacks risk further destabilizing the region.

This latest strike underscores the fragility of Ukraine’s security situation and raises urgent questions about how quickly additional defense aid can be deployed to protect major population centers.
