NEW DELHI: Nepal is witnessing one of its most turbulent phases in recent years as massive protests erupted across the country, leaving the government on edge. What began as public anger over the controversial social media ban has spiraled into widespread unrest, with thousands of demonstrators—led largely by the youth—taking to the streets.

According to reports, protesters vandalized and set fire to several government and political leaders’ residences, including those of senior figures such as Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and President Ram Chandra Poudel. Security forces have been deployed in large numbers to contain the situation, but clashes between police and demonstrators continue in multiple districts.

The government had initially imposed a sweeping ban on major social media platforms, citing concerns over misinformation and national security. However, after lifting the ban last week, a wave of dissent—fueled by young citizens demanding greater freedom of expression and accountability—erupted into a nationwide movement.

Various people have been reported injured in stone-pelting and baton charges, while property damage is mounting. Analysts warn the turmoil could deepen Nepal’s political instability, already strained by economic slowdown and fragile coalition politics.

Observers say the coming days will be crucial for Prachanda’s government, as pressure mounts both from the streets and opposition parties demanding urgent political reforms.
