NEW DELHI: The Government of India has unveiled the draft National Telecom Policy 2025 (NTP 2025) with an ambitious roadmap aimed at doubling annual investments in the sector to ?1 lakh crore by 2030, generating one million jobs, and expanding 5G coverage to 90% of the population.

The policy proposes a major push towards indigenous technology development, telecom exports, and enhanced rural connectivity. It also highlights the importance of spectrum efficiency, affordable data access, and AI-powered digital infrastructure, aligning with India’s vision of becoming a global telecom innovation hub.

Key highlights of the NTP 2025 draft:

  • ?1 lakh crore annual investment target by 2030

  • 5G coverage goal: 90% of the population

  • Creation of 1 million new jobs in telecom

  • Boosting domestic R&D and manufacturing

  • Enhancing telecom exports from India

  • Framework for 6G research and spectrum reform

  • Focus on disaster-resilient and secure telecom infrastructure

The policy also outlines plans to encourage green telecom practices, foster startups in the telecom-tech space, and create a converged regulatory framework to support emerging technologies like AI, IoT, and satellite communications.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has invited stakeholder feedback on the draft over the next 21 days, following which a final policy will be notified.

Officials noted that the policy is aligned with the goals of Digital India, Make in India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat, and will act as a blueprint for India's transition from a data-consuming to a telecom-exporting nation.
